… Says Government is Preparing Students for Competitive Job Opportunities
The Lagos State Education District II has completed six weeks of intensive vocational training in Photography, Soap making, Tie and Dye, Hair Dressing/Barbing, Ottoman Chair and Shoe Making, Fashion Design, Catering and Bead Making for students from different schools within the District
The District’s Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Anike Adekanye, in her address at the closing ceremony of the skills acquisition programme recently held at Maryland, challenged the students to make the best use of the opportunity given by the State Government to better their lives.
Noting that the State Government is investing in vocational training of students to prepare them for competitive job opportunities after school, Mrs. Adekanye said students that have made the State Government proud, through their excellent performances at different competitions, would always be celebrated.
The Permanent Secretary pointed out that the number of students, who recently gained admission into various higher institutions of learning, attests to the fact that the District lived up to the set goals of delivering quality education to students.
She said: “As much as we concentrate on classroom activities, we should not neglect the skills aspect, which is equally important because it makes our students better leaders and people who would not solely rely on white-collar jobs. With these skills imparted to the learners, we are confident of producing students that are academically sound, physically fit and psychologically prepared for the 21st-century academic and workplace challenges”.
While noting that it will not rest on its oars in producing competent students, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary said that the District has now become a reference point for excellent academic performances having emerged victorious in different competitions, including the emergence of a student from the District as the incumbent One-Day Governor in the State.
The Director of Co-curricular Science and Technology in the District, Mrs. Adebimpe Otunaike, appreciated the Governor and the entire leadership of the Ministry of Education for supporting the event, saying that the students would forever be grateful for the exposure to new skills acquired through the training.
Stating that the skills acquisition programme ensured students are productively engaged during the vacation period, Mrs. Otunaike maintained that youth restiveness and all other forms of societal ills arising from idleness will also, be reduced.
The Director also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the students during the training programme and encouraged others to be part of the initiative during the next long holidays by making the best use of the vacation to acquire additional skills and knowledge.
The winner of the Spelling Bee 2020, Jemima Marcus of Angus Memorial Grammar School, Somolu, was honoured by the District during the event, acknowledging that the improved learning environment further made learning interesting and more impactful for students.
