The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), on Tuesday led a comprehensive environmental sanitation exercise along Awolowo Way as part of efforts to strengthen public health and environmental sustainability within the council area.

The initiative aligns with the “E” component — Environmental and Health Care Initiatives — of the administration’s I.K.E.J.A Agenda, a policy framework designed to reposition the local government through structured reforms and community-focused interventions.

Since assuming office, Comrade Dauda has prioritised environmental management as a critical driver of public wellbeing and economic productivity.

The sanitation exercise, which drew participation from officials of the Department of Environment and Sanitation led by Sanitarian Mrs. Olatunde Omotayo, as well as members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), focused on desilting blocked drainages, clearing accumulated refuse, removing overgrown weeds, and sensitising residents and business operators on proper waste disposal practices.

In a demonstration of hands-on leadership, the chairman actively participated in the clearing and desilting operations, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to translating policy objectives into practical action.

Addressing participants and residents, Dauda emphasised that a clean environment remains fundamental to public health, economic growth and sustainable development. He noted that orderly surroundings are essential for thriving businesses and vibrant communities.

He further warned that environmental infractions would not be tolerated, disclosing that Environmental Health Officers have been directed to strictly enforce sanitation regulations and promptly address violations. Residents, market operators and corporate organisations were urged to maintain cleanliness around their premises at all times.

The chairman reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to build a cleaner, healthier and more organised Ikeja through sustained enforcement, continuous public sensitisation and strategic environmental interventions.
The sanitation exercise was held on February 17, 2026.
