Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a post on Instagram.
Announcing the death, the family described the celebrated actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and said his passing came after a life well lived.
> “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
The family identified the late actor as Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR), with his dates of birth and death given as July 11, 1942 – September 16, 2026.
The family also appealed to bloggers, social media influencers and members of the public to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors, with a career spanning several decades across theatre, television and film.
He trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and began his professional career in Britain, appearing in stage productions and British television before featuring in international films.
After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs established himself as one of the leading figures in the country’s entertainment industry and became a familiar face in Nollywood, earning widespread recognition for his commanding performances and versatility.
His distinguished career earned him several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
Beyond acting, Jacobs was actively involved in the development of Nigeria’s performing arts industry. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, co-founded the Lufodo Group, with interests in film and performing arts, including the training and development of emerging talents.
Olu Jacobs’ death marks the end of an illustrious career that helped shape generations of Nigerian theatre, television and film audiences.
