Funeral Rites For Lagos’ First Surveyor-general, Chief Olukunle Akinola, Begin Monday October 27

The family of the late Chief Surveyor Olukunle Akinola, the first Surveyor-General of Lagos State, has released details of a weeklong programme of funeral rites in honour of the revered elder statesman. The ceremonies are scheduled to hold from Monday, October 27, to Friday, October 31, 2025

The family of the late Chief Surveyor Olukunle Akinola, the first Surveyor-General of Lagos State, has released details of a weeklong programme of funeral rites in honour of the revered elder statesman. The ceremonies are scheduled to hold from Monday, October 27, to Friday, October 31, 2025.

According to the family, the rites will commence with a Service of Songs organised by the Christian Unity Band of Nigeria on Monday, October 27, at 13 Babatunde Ladega Street, Omole Phase 1, Ikeja, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, October 28, a Service of Songs will be held by the Office of the Surveyor-General of Lagos State and the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors at the same venue and time.

The third Service of Songs, hosted by Bola Memorial Anglican Church, Ikeja, will take place on Wednesday, October 29, at 13 Babatunde Ladega Street, Omole Phase 1, Ikeja, by 5:00 p.m., featuring reflections and tributes from friends, colleagues, and associates.

A Commendation Service is scheduled for Thursday, October 30, at Bola Memorial Anglican Church, Ikeja, starting at 11:00 a.m. Later that day, a Wake Keep and Night of Tributes will be held by St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Akinyele, Ipaja, at 3 Olukunle Close, behind the Post Office, Ipaja, from 4:00 p.m.

The funeral rites will climax with a Burial Service on Friday, October 31, at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Ipaja, by 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the City of God Event Centre, Ipaja.

Lagos Panorama had earlier reported on Saturday, October 11, that Chief Olukunle Akinola, FRICS, DFNIS, passed on peacefully at the age of 94.

Chief Akinola was a pioneering figure in Nigeria’s surveying profession and made history as the first Surveyor-General of Lagos State. Beyond his professional excellence, he was a respected community leader and held the prestigious chieftaincy title of Asoju Oba of Ipaja.

A man of integrity, humility, and unwavering dedication to public service, Chief Akinola’s contributions to the development of Lagos State and the advancement of the surveying profession in Nigeria will remain an enduring legacy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Grace Folake Akinola, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday on September 29, with her husband joyfully in attendance.

Chief Akinola is also survived by his children, including Mayegun Kehinde Akinola, Chairman, Board of Governing Council, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, and Dr. (Prof.) Akinola, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), who also served as former National President of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON).

He is further survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom continue to uphold his cherished values of faith, discipline, and service to humanity.

Chief Akinola was a trailblazer and one of Nigeria’s most respected professionals, having made history as the first Surveyor-General of Lagos State. He also served his community with distinction and held.
