The Flamingoes lost the semi-final match at the ongoing women under 17 World Cup in India to Colombia after a penalty shootout.

The Flamingoes lost the semi-final match at the ongoing women under 17 World Cup in India to Colombia after a 6-5 defeat in a penalty shootout.

They faced a team that looked much better on the field but they held on for a goalless draw and gave themselves an opportunity to win it from the shootout. Alas, it was not to be as their luck ran out inside the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the Indian city of Goa.

The early kick-off match looked promising with the Flamingoes taking up the ball possession but they couldn’t find the back of the net.

Colombian women, who were also at the semis stage for the first time in their history, kept up the pressure from the Flamingos for the first 15th minutes of the match.

The Colombian girls took control for the remainder of the match.

Flamingoes Head Coach, Bankole Olowookere tried to play the tactical game plan against the United States women’s team in the quarter-final match that was won on penalties.

Omamuzo Edafe, who netted the winner against the USA, had the opportunity to replicate the feat again when she stepped up to take the decisive kick to make it 5-4 after the Colombians missed their third kick.

The defeat was the second loss of the Flamingoes in the tournament where they lost to Germany’s woman’s team 2 -1 on match day 1 of the tournament.

Colombia women will play the tournament’s final game against Germany or Spain.
