The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections in Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki, and Somolu following the deaths of three councillors.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections in Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki, and Somolu following the deaths of three councillors.

The vacancies, which have left the affected wards without representation, were raised during Thursday’s plenary by Hon. Prince Akinsanya Nureni, representing Mushin Constituency I. He noted that the absence of elected councillors has persisted and urged the House to intervene to ensure that fresh elections are conducted without delay.

Hon. Esho Kazeem of Mushin Constituency II confirmed the death of a councillor in his area, adding that no replacement election has been held. He supported the call for immediate action to restore representation in the affected wards.

Also contributing, Hon. Kehinde Joseph urged the Assembly to formally write to the governor, requesting that LASIEC commence the bye-election process. He further proposed that the House observe a minute of silence in honour of the deceased councillors and extend condolence letters to their families.

In his ruling, Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa ordered a minute of silence and directed the Clerk of the House to write to the governor accordingly.

The deceased councillors are:

Oluwakemi Rufai (Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki), who died on August 13, 2025, 17 days after inauguration.

Zainab Shotayo (Ward C3, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, Mushin), who died on August 18, 2025, 22 days after inauguration.

Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan (Ward F, Somolu), who died on September 21, 2025, 56 days after inauguration.
