The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda, on Saturday led council officials and residents in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across several communities within the council area.
The sanitation exercise covered Ipodo, Seriki-Aro, and Anifowoshe areas, with the chairman personally supervising the clean-up operations aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
Demonstrating hands-on leadership, Comrade Dauda joined sanitation workers in clearing overgrown grasses and cleaning drainage corridors along Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way and the Olowu axis of Isale-Awori in Ikeja.
The chairman reiterated the importance of environmental cleanliness in preventing disease outbreaks and maintaining a safe and healthy community. He urged residents to make environmental sanitation a continuous responsibility rather than a monthly exercise.
Residents and council officials commended the chairman’s active participation, describing it as a reflection of his commitment to good governance and community development.
The monthly sanitation exercise forms part of the local government’s efforts to sustain a clean environment and improve the quality of life for residents across Ikeja.
The Supervisor for Environment in Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Edward Aragbonfoh, has expressed displeasure over the nonchalant attitude of some residents and shop owners towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Speaking during the monthly sanitation exercise, Aragbonfoh stressed that environmental cleanliness is a civic responsibility that must be taken seriously by all residents.
He explained that the monthly two-hour clean-up exercise, which requires residents to remain indoors, bag their waste, and clean both their compounds and surrounding drains, remains a crucial initiative for public health and environmental sustainability.
Despite concerns over poor compliance in some areas, he described the sanitation programme as a welcome development, noting that it plays a key role in promoting a healthier and safer community.
He also commended the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Akeem Olalekan Dauda, for his consistent leadership and active participation in both the bi-weekly and monthly environmental sanitation exercises.
According to him, the chairman has continued to lead by example, personally engaging in sanitation activities and demonstrating strong commitment to a cleaner Ikeja.
The council reiterated its appeal to residents to cooperate fully with sanitation directives in order to ensure a healthier and more livable environment for all.
