Falconets Edge Senegal 2–1, Advance to Final Round of U-20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, secured a 2–1 victory over Senegal at the Annexe du Stade Abdoulaye Wade on Saturday to book a place in the final round of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers.

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, secured a 2–1 victory over Senegal at the Annexe du Stade Abdoulaye Wade on Saturday to book a place in the final round of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers.

The result sealed a 3–1 aggregate triumph for the two-time World Cup silver medallists, who had earlier claimed a 1–0 first-leg win in Abeokuta.

Nigeria began on the front foot, asserting dominance from the opening whistle and rattling the crossbar three times in the early exchanges. Their persistence paid off in the 19th minute when Favour Chiamaka Nkwocha delivered a well-taken corner that was met by Kindness Ifeanyi, who rose highest to power home a header — replicating her decisive contribution in the first leg.

The Falconets maintained their attacking momentum and came close to doubling their lead shortly after. Folajomi Alabi latched onto a long ball over the defence, but her left-footed effort was parried away by Senegal goalkeeper Adjie Ndiaye.

Senegal thought they had restored parity in the 37th minute from a corner situation, but the effort was chalked off for offside, allowing Nigeria to head into the interval 1–0 ahead on the day and 2–0 on aggregate.

Nigeria extended their advantage in the 69th minute, once again capitalising on a set piece. Tumininu Adeshina whipped in a precise corner, and Precious Oscar timed her run perfectly to head home, making it 2–0 and effectively putting the tie beyond reach at 3–0 on aggregate.

The hosts pulled one back in the 76th minute through Sokhna Nogaye Pene, who unleashed a stunning 35-yard strike after evading her marker. Despite late pressure from the home side, the Falconets remained composed to see out the contest and confirm their progression.

Nigeria will now face Malawi in the fourth and final qualifying round as they intensify their pursuit of one of Africa’s four slots at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. Malawi advanced after a commanding 5–1 second-leg victory, sealing a 6–2 aggregate win.

In other results across the continent, Tanzania edged Kenya 3–1 on penalties following a 1–1 aggregate draw. Uganda progressed with a 2–1 aggregate win over Zambia after a 1–0 home victory, while Ghana advanced 3–2 on aggregate against South Africa.

Benin recorded a resounding 5–0 aggregate triumph over Egypt, highlighted by a 4–0 second-leg success, while Cameroon moved on 5–1 on aggregate despite a narrow 1–0 loss to Botswana.

MPThe decisive final-round fixtures will see Cameroon face Tanzania, Ghana take on Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire meet Benin, and Nigeria square off against Malawi for a coveted place in Poland.
