NEW INEC CHAIRMAN, PROF. JOASH OJO AMUPITAN, CHARGES STAFF TO “BREAK DOWN SILOS,” REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ELECTORAL INTEGRITY AND NATIONAL UNITY

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday formally inaugurated its new era of leadership with the official handover of duties to the newly appointed Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), at a brief but momentous ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The event marked a symbolic transition and reaffirmation of the Commission’s commitment to democratic excellence as staff and management welcomed Professor Amupitan into office.

In her valedictory remarks, the Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who handed over the reins of leadership, described the occasion as “a significant moment in the life of our Commission and indeed in our nation’s democratic journey.”

She commended the impeccable record of professionalism within INEC and highlighted the urgency of the task ahead, particularly as the Commission prepares for the Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

“You are assuming office at a most crucial time,” she told the new Chairman, noting that four National Commissioners were already in Anambra on a readiness assessment mission. “The expectations of Nigerians have never been higher. Elections are the lifeblood of democracy, and the credibility of every process lies in our collective commitment.”

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu assured Professor Amupitan that he was taking over “on firm and fertile ground,” lauding INEC staff as “some of the finest, most dedicated, and patriotic public servants in Nigeria.”

The event featured the introduction of the Commission’s 23 departmental directors, whom she described as “the generals on the field of electioneering.”

Also in attendance was a distinguished delegation from the University of Jos, the alma mater of the new Chairman, led by the Vice-Chancellor, alongside the Registrar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Bursar, and Librarian — a gesture underscoring the university’s pride in its alumnus. Professor Amupitan’s wife, Professor Yemisi Amupitan, and their children were also present to witness the milestone.

In his inaugural address, Professor Amupitan expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading Nigeria’s electoral body.

He reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and discipline, identifying the upcoming Anambra election as a critical test of the Commission’s readiness and credibility.

“The eyes of the nation are upon us, and it is our duty to rise to that occasion,” he declared. “We must restore voter confidence, address voter apathy, and ensure that every Nigerian feels ownership of our democracy.”

The new INEC Chairman also called for unity and collaboration within the institution, urging staff to work beyond departmental boundaries.

“Let us break down silos, foster open communication, and create an environment where every voice is heard and valued,” he said.

Professor Amupitan further pledged to prioritize staff welfare, emphasizing fairness and transparency in his administration’s dealings.

“We will expect a lot from you, and in return, we must be honest and responsive to your needs. Welfare will be a top priority,” he assured.

He concluded with a message of hope and determination:

“Together, let us strengthen the pillars of our democracy and ensure the continued legitimacy of our elections. This is our collective charge — and our shared duty to Nigeria.”
