President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the ongoing 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries across the country as a clear demonstration of internal democracy and a major boost for grassroots political participation within the ruling party.

President Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday after participating in the APC Presidential Primaries at Ikoyi-Obalende Ward L2 in Lagos, where he commended party members for their peaceful conduct, enthusiasm, and commitment to democratic values.

The President, accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was warmly received at the venue by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, former Minister of Finance Wale Edun, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.

Speaking after casting his vote, President Tinubu said the exercise reflected the party’s strong commitment to inclusive and transparent democratic processes.

“This is a demonstration of internal democracy, and it has been going on very well according to plan. This is grassroots politics where every member of the party has the right to participate,” the President stated.

“It shows that we have internal democracy and it’s peaceful and well organised.”

Tinubu also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primaries nationwide, praising APC governors and party officials for ensuring credible processes from the ward level to delegate accreditation and membership validation.

“I am very satisfied that governors have done well in their various states, from the ward congresses to local government congresses, delegate accreditation, validation, membership registration, and certification of the electoral process. It has been done very well, and with this, you could rate democracy at a high level,” he added.

The President reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions by allowing party members at the grassroots freely choose their leaders and representatives, stressing that popular participation remains key to sustainable democracy.

He further commended electoral officials, party leaders, and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and credible exercise nationwide, while urging Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and national unity.

President Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s dedication to democratic governance, political stability, and policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on May 23, 2026.
