World Athletics Championships: Kanyinsola Ajayi qualifies for finals, first Nigerian in 18 years

Kanyinsola Ajayi, a young Nigerian sprint star, recorded a time of 9.93s in the semifinals of the men’s 100m at the ongoing World Athletics Championships, earning a spot in the final on his birthday, while Noah Lyles of the USA secured first place with a time of 9.92s, edging ahead of him on Sunday.

Ajayi has broken Nigeria’s 18-year drought without a finalist in the men’s 100m at the World Championships.

The Ikorodu-born athlete is now carrying the hopes of a nation in Tokyo, as his compatriot, Okon, failed to advance in the second semifinals, finishing seventh.

For the first time in 18 years, since Olusoji Fasuba reached the 100m final at the World Championship!
