President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to global collaboration in building a resilient, equitable and sustainable future, stressing that no country can achieve sustainability in isolation.

The President stated this while speaking at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the United Arab Emirates, where he underscored the urgency of collective action in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development worldwide.

Delivering his remarks during the session titled “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future,” Tinubu said global interconnectedness and shared responsibility remain critical to translating climate goals into tangible economic and social benefits.

According to him, Nigeria’s approach to climate action is anchored on three core pillars: energy transition, climate resilience and sustainable development. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while pursuing a just and inclusive transition to renewable energy that aligns with the country’s economic realities.

The President outlined several initiatives being implemented by his administration, including the diversification of energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, expansion of infrastructure for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, and the harnessing of solid minerals to support green energy development.

He also highlighted the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices to enhance food security and reduce environmental impact, as well as the introduction of the National Clean Cooking Policy, designed to promote clean energy solutions with significant environmental, health and socio-economic benefits.

“These investments are capital-intensive and require international collaboration. By partnering with global leaders and leveraging technology, we are finding innovative ways to address our environmental challenges,” Tinubu said.

The President further noted Nigeria’s leadership in financing green projects, recalling that the country was the first in Africa to issue Sovereign Green Bonds, with a third issuance currently underway.

Emphasising inclusiveness, Tinubu said his administration is working closely with local communities to tackle environmental challenges such as deforestation, desertification, coastal erosion, flooding and pollution, ensuring that climate solutions are both effective and people-centred.

He commended the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for his leadership in convening the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, describing the forum as a vital platform for global leaders to collectively address pressing environmental and sustainability challenges.
