Ashimi leads October environmental exercise, tackles refuse accumulation along Bashua Road, urges residents to embrace daily cleanliness

Somolu Local Government has intensified its environmental sanitation campaign, mobilising residents across its eight wards and clearing accumulated refuse along Bashua Road as part of efforts to promote a cleaner, healthier and safer community.

The October monthly environmental sanitation exercise, led by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, witnessed active participation from residents, government officials and other stakeholders, reinforcing the council’s commitment to improved environmental hygiene and public health.

A major highlight of the exercise was the clearing of refuse heaps along Bashua Road, with Hon. Ashimi personally overseeing the intervention to address waste accumulation and improve environmental conditions in the area.

To ensure effective monitoring and compliance, the Honourable Supervisors were deployed across the eight wards to supervise the exercise, engage residents and reinforce the importance of proper waste management.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Ashimi commended residents for their impressive turnout and cooperation, urging them to sustain the commitment to environmental cleanliness beyond the monthly sanitation programme.

He stressed that proper refuse disposal, regular cleaning of surroundings and the avoidance of indiscriminate waste dumping were essential to preventing disease outbreaks and safeguarding public health.

The chairman further called on residents to take ownership of their immediate environment, emphasising that maintaining a clean community was a shared responsibility that required the consistent cooperation of government and residents.

Residents also commended the council’s intervention, particularly the efforts to clear refuse heaps and address environmental concerns across the community.

Those who participated in the exercise included the Vice Chairman, Hon. Taiwo Ojomu; the Leader of the Legislative House; councillors; Honourable Supervisors; health officers; management staff and other stakeholders.

The Ashimi-led administration reiterated its commitment to sustaining environmental sanitation and improving public health across Somolu, while urging residents to make cleanliness a daily habit rather than a responsibility reserved for monthly sanitation exercises.

A cleaner Somolu begins with you!
