Sanwo-Olu Approves Transformation of Obalende Bus Stop into Modern Transport Hub

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the redevelopment of the Obalende Bus Stop into a modern bus transport hub aimed at improving traffic flow, environmental quality and urban aesthetics within the Obalende loop, underbridge and adjoining lay-by areas.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the redevelopment of the Obalende Bus Stop into a modern bus transport hub aimed at improving traffic flow, environmental quality and urban aesthetics within the Obalende loop, underbridge and adjoining lay-by areas.

The project, which will be fully funded by MTN Nigeria as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, is designed to reposition the Obalende Bus Stop as a functional, organised and visually appealing public transport facility fully integrated into Lagos State’s megacity vision.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, who said work on the project would commence soon. According to him, the transformation will introduce organised and regulated bus operations, supported by clear and well-labelled location signages.

The new facility, to be known as Y’ELLO Bus Park, will be equipped with solar panels to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. It will also include a recyclables drop-off station to encourage proper waste management and recycling practices.

Mr Wahab explained that tree planting would form a key component of the project to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the area. In addition, the hub will provide designated road camps for LAWMA sweepers and security agencies, including the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) and the Neighbourhood Safety Agency.

Other facilities to be provided include food and beverage kiosks for commuters, ticketing booths and public toilets aimed at eliminating open defecation. He noted that the project is community-focused, with the objective of improving public health, safety, security and the overall aesthetics of Obalende, while also contributing to a reduction in crime.

The Commissioner further stated that the proposed hub would help protect the McGregor Canal, which frequently becomes silted and blocked, necessitating repeated clean-up operations by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

He noted that the Obalende Bus Stop has evolved into one of the busiest transport hubs in Lagos, serving as a major gateway linking Ikoyi and Victoria Island, as well as providing access to the Mainland via the Third Mainland Bridge.

According to him, rapid urbanisation, population growth and informal economic activities over the years have significantly altered the character of the area, leading to challenges such as illegal trading, poor waste disposal, unauthorised occupation by non-state actors, lack of greening and landscaping, open defecation, shanties, illegal structures and the presence of vagrants.

It will be recalled that Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the site on February 18, 2024, where he observed the deteriorating state of the environment and its negative impact on security, public health, mobility and overall liveability, particularly given Obalende’s strategic importance to key business districts in Lagos.

Following the Governor’s visit, the state government initiated a series of interventions to restore order in the area, including recent enforcement and clean-up exercises carried out in December 2025 and January 2026 by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

The Obalende transport hub project is part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader commitment to sustainable urban renewal and the realisation of a cleaner, safer and more efficient Lagos under the A Greater Lagos Rising agenda.
