The Nigerian Police Academy, POLAC, on Sunday explained how one of its cadets, Sulaiman Jika, died after a brief illness on Saturday.

POLAC Commandant, Sadiq Idris Abubakar, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG explained how the Cadet passed on in a statement of condolence to his family, friends, and other well-wishers on Sunday.

The explanation of how Jika died was obviously included in the statement to counter different speculations in the media on the reasons for the demise of the police officer in training.
Some reports had indicated that Jika’s colleagues said he died as a result of starvation.

However, another report attributed his demise to a lack of appropriate care and treatment after he was admitted for treatment of malaria at the POLAC clinic.

An unnamed classmate of the deceased was quoted as confirming that negligence by the staff at POLAC led to his death.

However, in the condolence message issued and signed by ASP Hussain Suleman, its spokesperson, POLAC said Jika who is a student in the Department of Computer Science of the institution had taken ill on 29 August and sought medical attention at the clinic of the Academy.

He said the Adamawa-born Cadet was treated and discharged from the hospital, before he took ill again on Saturday, leading to his eventual passage.

The statement partly reads, “Following a diligent course of treatment and his gradual recovery, he was certified fit and discharged by the Medical Doctor on call the next day and tasked to return at regular intervals for checks which he adhered to.

“However, fate took an unforeseen turn. On 2nd September 2023, he was once again admitted to the clinic for further examination and care following a complaint of restlessness.

“Though his vitals were normal upon examination and all necessary medical steps were taken, we regrettably report his untimely passing.”

While extending his deepest condolences to the grieving family, friends, and loved ones of Cadet Sulaiman Jika, AIG Abubakar said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this period of profound sorrow. May God Almighty grant them the strength and resilience to bear this heavy loss.”

“Jika, a dedicated cadet from the Department of Computer Science, was a proud native of Adamawa state.”

The Nigeria Police Academy was established in 1988.

It was established to produce the ideal Superior Police Officer who is equipped with the knowledge and skills to face the challenges of policing in an increasingly complex Nigerian society and technologically sophisticated world.
