The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, has said that the State Government’s Operative Development Plans, which were designed to serve as a benchmark for every development in the State, are on course.
Dr. Salako disclosed this during a recent visit by a team from the World Bank and Lagos State Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) to his office in Alausa, Ikeja, for matters relating to green e-mobility survey in Lagos State.
The Commissioner explained that the e-mobility survey is geared towards addressing climate change in the transportation sector by supporting the adoption of electric vehicles with zero-carbon emission as against the prevalent use of vehicles with internal combustion engines.
He stated that the survey, spearheaded by the World Bank, should leverage the existing Development Plans for spatial considerations such as the location of parks, charging points and routing, among others, to make the adoption of e-mobility in the State seamless.
While informing that the Ministry, in line with its mandate, had prepared Higher and Lower Order Plans to guide the development of the State, Saloko disclosed that more Plans are underway. He listed some of the existing plans as Epe Master Plan, Oshodi-Isolo Model City Plan, Agege-Ifako Model City Plan and Ikoyi-Victoria Island Model City Plan among others.
The Commissioner reiterated that the Ministry is ready to support the World Bank and LAMATA initiative by providing adequate information on the various spatial dimensions of the survey, including population distribution and development plans.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Physical Planning, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, commended the World Bank and LAMATA for spearheading research into the future, emphasising that the Ministry will do all within its power to support the initiative.
Earlier, the World Bank representative, Mr. Olatunji Ahmed, explained that the essence of the visit was to inform the Ministry about the commencement of the mission on the study of sustainable green e-mobility solutions in Lagos State.
The LAMATA representative, Mr. Obafemi Shitta-Bey, said the study will kick off in Lagos State due to its high population and large transportation hub.
