The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed the Supreme Court’s split ruling on the state’s withheld local government allocations, describing it as a strong reaffirmation of the rule of law.
In a statement on Friday, the State Chairman of the party, Sunday Bisi, said the judgement had exposed what he called “unconstitutional directives” earlier issued by the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Finance, authorising the release of council funds to “illegal entities.”
Bisi recalled that the PDP had repeatedly warned that the controversy was worsened by sacked local government chairmen who allegedly opened bank accounts in defiance of subsisting court judgments. He said the situation deteriorated further after the Court of Appeal upheld the validity of the February 22 local government election, which produced the current council leadership.
“Despite this clarity, the attorney-general still authorised payments to individuals without mandate simply because they belonged to the APC,” Bisi alleged.
According to him, the Supreme Court’s position has now rendered the UBA accounts opened by the former chairmen “inoperable and tainted by illegality.”
The PDP chairman urged all stakeholders to respect the ruling and avoid what he described as attempts by “desperate elements hungry for power” to manipulate the process. He also commended the Awotunde-led ALGON for maintaining restraint “despite stark provocations from enemies of democratic stability.”
Bisi expressed appreciation to Osun residents for their resilience during what he termed a “dark period,” and encouraged continued support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
He reiterated that only the February 22 elected chairmen—whose mandate has already been affirmed by the Appeal Court—remain legally recognised.
Bisi further cautioned security agencies against taking sides, warning that offering protection to officials removed by court order “invites anarchy.”
