The Ogun and Lagos State governments have confirmed that British-Nigerian boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Sunday and is currently in stable condition.
In a joint statement issued by the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the governments disclosed that the vehicle conveying Joshua and three other occupants collided with a stationary truck, resulting in two fatalities.
The statement expressed deep sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident, offering prayers for strength and comfort as they navigate the difficult period.
According to the statement, Anthony Joshua and one other passenger were promptly evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos, where they underwent thorough clinical assessments. Medical professionals confirmed that both individuals are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time.
The governments added that a comprehensive medical team has been assembled to continue monitoring their condition closely, noting that Joshua has since been in good communication with his family.
The Ogun and Lagos State governments assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that the injured receive the highest standard of medical care. Investigations have also commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
While appreciating the concern and goodwill expressed by members of the public, the governments appealed for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family during this period.
