A Nigerian, Michael Ojo, who was also a former Red Star basketball team player, died on Friday during training in Belgrade.

The club confirmed his death on its website, saying the 27-year-old Nigerian collapsed during weight room training and could not be resuscitated.

The 2.16-metres tall centre who made his debut for the Nigerian male team, D’Tigers, in 2018 played for Florida State University in the United States.

Ojo was reported to have tested positive for the coronavirus, but also that he had recovered. Local media reported that he died of a heart attack.

“In all of my years of coaching, I’ve never been around a person who captivated the emotions of everybody he came into contact with like Michael,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said in a statement after learning of Ojo’s death. “He had to be the most popular person in Tallahassee, and, certainly at Florida State University. Michael Ojo was a wonderful, wonderful human being.

“He was a great teammate and really represented what the Seminole spirit is all about. He was one of the purest Seminoles that I have ever been around; he will be missed tremendously by the whole Seminole nation.”

After going undrafted in 2017, Ojo moved to Europe where he started his professional basketball career with FMP Belgrade. In 2018, he signed with the regional Adriatic League champions, Red Star Belgrade, where he was hugely popular among the club’s fans.

“Farewell good giant,” said a post on a Red Star fan page.

Ojo averaged 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in the ABA league and 4.1 points and 3 rebounds in the EuroLeague with Red Star.

The Belgrade club released him at the end of this season and Ojo was believed to be looking for another team in Europe.

The towering 7-feet-1-inch (2.16 m) center wore shoe size 21 and Nike reportedly had to spend $15,000 on a machine to create a size to fit him while he played college basketball in Florida.
