Nigeria’s Super Eagles booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday after a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria in their quarterfinal encounter.
The win, which also extended Nigeria’s impressive defensive run at the tournament, marked another clean sheet for the Super Eagles as they continued their quest for continental glory.
Victor Osimhen opened the scoring shortly after the restart, heading home in the 47th minute to give Nigeria a deserved lead. The striker, who has been instrumental for the team throughout the competition, later turned provider in the 56th minute when he selflessly set up Akor Adams, who calmly doubled Nigeria’s advantage.
Osimhen’s decision to pass to Adams, rather than pursue a potential fifth goal that would have seen him draw level with Morocco’s Brahim Diaz as joint top scorer, was widely praised as a demonstration of teamwork and leadership.
Nigeria maintained control of the match thereafter, frustrating the Algerian side and seeing out the contest comfortably to secure their place in the last four.
The victory sets up a high-profile semi-final clash against tournament hosts Morocco, as the Super Eagles aim to build on their momentum and push closer to lifting the AFCON 2025 title.
With his goal and assist against Algeria, Osimhen once again underlined his importance to the national team, further cementing his status as one of the Super Eagles’ most valuable players in the tournament.
