Speaking at the closing ceremony of the competition, organised under strict COVID-19 protocols, the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Oluwatoyin Gafaar, explained that the event comprised of a one-day mentorship programme and two days of sporting activities in Swimming and Taekwondo Poomsae.

He stated that the intention of the Commission was to make the event, with participants from the Public and Private Schools across the Six Education Districts in Lagos State, a quarterly one as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are relaxed totally for sporting activities.

In his words: “Our ambition is to do more of school sports and grassroots sports development in Lagos for the State to continue being the sports hub, not only in Nigeria but Africa. We are determined to achieve this because we have the total backing of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu”.

He pointed out that he was impressed by the student-participants as more than 20 new talents were discovered in Swimming and Taekwondo events, stressing that the primary purpose of the games was to encourage the students in sporting activities, identify talents and prepare them for a brighter future in sports.

“Our aim was also to demonstrate to everyone that education and sports can go hand-in-hand. They are not mutually exclusive and one should not suffer because of the other. We have discovered new talents with this school sports event with one of the students breaking a State record in the swimming event”, the Director-General asserted.
