The Lagos State Government, on Wednesday, engaged diverse stakeholders within the Kosofe Local Government Area to signal the commencement of preparations for the Kosofe Model City Plan.
Speaking at the inception of the workshop, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, stated that the occasion was organised for the purpose of assessing and collating needs of the stakeholders as inputs for the Kosofe Model City Plan, which was envisaged to provide lasting and pragmatic solutions to the observed problems of perennial flooding, traffic congestion, housing shortage and slum prevalence among others.
Noting the significance of the commencement of the Kosofe Model City Plan pivoted on the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda, Salako said that Kosofe Model Planning Area and Lagos Island remained the two areas within the State without an Operative Development Plan.
The Commissioner stated that the preparation of the Kosofe Model City Plan, like other previous plans, would involve all stakeholders expected to lend their support, raise critical issues and express genuine concerns to move the project forward.
In his words: “The Plan has become imperative for the wholesome achievement of the State’s desire for greatness and a sustainable physical environment for future generations, while it will provide an inclusive, comprehensive, sustainable and implementable framework for the development, use and management of Kosofe over a period of 20 years, that is 2020- 2040”.
He emphasised that the preparation and periodic review of Development Plans as the basis for effective control and management of Lagos urban space was the responsibility of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
Also at the workshop were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Mrs. Abiola Kosegbe; the Lead Consultant for the Project, Tpl. Ayo Adediran of the Urban Planning Smart Solution Limted; the Oba of Ketu, Oba Isiaka Balogun Oyero and Onikosi of Ikosi, Oba Alamu Oloyede, among others.
