The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has congratulated the family of the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, on his posthumous recognition with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a historic honour that makes him the first African artist to receive the prestigious accolade.
The award was presented on January 31, 2026, at the Grammy Special Merit Awards held in Los Angeles, United States, and was received on his behalf by his children, Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the recognition as a landmark achievement and a moment of pride for the Kuti family, Lagos State, Nigeria, and the African continent at large. She noted that the honour underscores Lagos State’s position as Africa’s cultural heartbeat and a fertile ground for globally celebrated creative icons.
According to her, the Ministry remains committed to preserving Fela’s enduring legacy and promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage through sustained support for the arts, creative industries, and cultural diplomacy.
“This historic recognition affirms Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s immeasurable contributions to global music, culture, and social consciousness. Nearly three decades after his passing, his music remains a timeless force that boldly confronted military dictatorship, corruption, social injustice, and the oppression of the masses, while amplifying Africa’s voice on the global stage,” she said.
Reacting to the honour, the Kuti family described the award as a symbolic bridge between generations and a reflection of the growing global appreciation of African music and culture.
Beyond his musical achievements, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is widely regarded as a cultural revolutionary whose Afrobeat sound and fearless activism influenced generations of artists across the world. His legacy continues to inspire artistic expression, resistance, and critical dialogue across continents.
