LASEMA battles Tanker Fire on the Kara bridge inward Lagos Ibadan Expressway.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA swiftly responded to a fire outbreak on Kara Bridge, inward Lagos-Ibadan Expressway today, 21st June, 2020.

Consequent upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team, Tiger Squad at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that an articulated truck laden with 33,000litres of premium motor spirit (pms) crashed into another articulated truck while driving inward the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The impact of the crash resulted in the inferno.

Investigation conducted at the incident scene attributed the cause of the inferno to reckless driving, while driving along the road. It was also discovered that four(4) articulated trucks were ravaged by the fire outbreak, two (2) articulated trucks laden with 33,000 litres of premium motor spirit(petrol) each, an articulated truck laden with several cubic feet of compressed natural gas and another articulated tipper truck.

The Lagos State Fire Service, in conjunction with LASEMA Fire Team, UBA Fire Team, Federal Fire Team and Julius Berger Fire Team worked tirelessly to curtail the further spread of the fire. While trying to curtail the spread of the fire, the articulated truck laden with several cubic feet of compressed natural gas exploded.
Two persons were rescued alive, one with minor injuries whilst the incident recorded two fatalities, one body recovered and the other charred to the bones which will be sent for pathology test.

The Incident Commander DG/CEO, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu coordinated all primary responders and ensured the dampening down and recovery phase of the operation was swift, smooth and timely. However, the trucks were recovered with the aid of the Agency’s heavy duty equipments, a combination of the Folk lift (Goliath) and Super metro (Elephant) to a lay-by. The commodity was moved to the Command and Control Centre, Alausa, to be handed over to State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU.
The road has been restored to normalcy.
