Lagos warns traffic, environmental offenders as crackdown looms

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, also known as the Lagos State Taskforce, has vowed to begin arresting and prosecuting traffic and environmental offenders after a one-month public sensitisation campaign across the state

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, also known as the Lagos State Taskforce, has vowed to begin arresting and prosecuting traffic and environmental offenders after a one-month public sensitisation campaign across the state

The chairman, Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this on Thursday after a public sensitisation and advocacy programme aimed at promoting traffic and environmental orderliness and public safety in Lagos State.

The programme was held under the theme, “Towards Achieving Traffic and Environmental Orderliness and Public Safety in Lagos State: The Dos and Don’ts.”

Akerele said the campaign had been conducted across various local government areas and local council development areas in the state to educate residents on prohibited conduct and the consequences of violating traffic and environmental regulations.

He said, “This educational programme has been done in other local governments. We have been doing it in other local governments and local council development areas.

The need for this is just to educate the violators. After a month of this education, we will begin to arrest and prosecute any violator.

You have the flyers now; you can mention all those violations. The exercise is done just to sensitise and educate people on the evils of violating the laws of Lagos State, particularly the traffic sector reform law of 2015 and the environmental reform law of 2017.”

Akerele, during the sensitisation at Oshodi Market, highlighted various traffic and environmental offences that should be avoided.

He also noted that the essence of the campaign was to warn the public against ignorance of the law.

Akerele noted that the campaign was designed to familiarise residents with traffic and environmental regulations and encourage compliance before enforcement begins.

The exercise is part of efforts to improve road safety, promote environmental sanitation and ensure compliance with relevant laws across the state.
