Lagos seals mall, public toilet for improper waste management

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources on Tuesday sealed the COSJANE Mall along Festac Link Road and a public toilet facility on Offin Road for alleged improper waste disposal.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement shared on X on Tuesday.

Speaking on the public toilet, Wahab said the operators deliberately channelled their septic chamber directly into the drainage system.

He noted that the action led to offensive odour and sewage overflow within the community. The development, according to the commissioner, constituted a public nuisance, environmental pollution, and posed significant risks to human health.

In a related development, Wahab said the ministry also sealed the COSJANE Mall located along Festac Link Road in Amuwo Odofin for discharging untreated wastewater into the public drainage system.

He noted that the enforcement action followed several warnings issued to the mall’s management, which were allegedly ignored.

He stated that the discharge of untreated wastewater into public drains amounts to environmental pollution and a threat to public health.

Wahab reiterated the ministry’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring proper wastewater management across the state.
