LAGOS SDGs WEEK: Old English Bakery Champions Zero Hunger

As part of the ongoing Lagos Sustainable Development Goals Week, popular confectionary mart, Old English Superstore and Bakery has offered free loaves of bread to residents of the State in all its outlets.

Speaking during the launch of the exercise at the headquarters of the Superstore at Omole Estate, Ojodu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals and Investment, Mrs. Solape Hammond described the initiative as a determined effort by the government to create a structure that will provide progressive partners and an enabling environment to support the sustainable development agenda.

Mrs. Hammond affirmed that the State Government is committed to comprehensive, integrated and transformation programmes to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote development.

In her remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, confirmed that the SDGs Week is people-centred which is based on social inclusion.

He emphasised that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals cannot happen without ending hunger and malnutrition, adding that comprehensive efforts to ensure everyone gets the basic necessities of life remains a priority of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration.

“In view of the pandemic’s effects on the food and agricultural sector, prompt measures are needed to ensure that food supply chains are kept alive to mitigate the risk of large shocks that have a considerable impact on everybody, especially on the poor and the most vulnerable”, Fatodu disclosed.

According to him, the pathway to achieving zero hunger should promote integrated approaches that respond to the multiple, interconnected causes of hunger and malnutrition.

While applauding the Old English Superstore for their immeasurable support, Fatodu encouraged all to work together towards the Zero Hunger vision, stating that government is poised to provide resources towards the delivery of 2030 Agenda.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Superstore, Mr. Akogun Lanre Alfred appreciated the State Government for being proactive in its programme towards meeting the basic and sensitive needs of the people, particularly during the COVID-19 period.

He submitted that the business firm is excited to be identified with the State Government’s noble efforts of encouraging, engaging, accelerating and amplifying collective action to create food systems that deliver for all people. The giveaway took place simultaneously in all the firm’s outlets across the State as thousands of residents trouped in to partake in the offering.
