Lagos Drivers’ Institute records increase in training requests

The Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, has recorded an increase in the request by commercial and professional drivers seeking for training at its Ikeja Centre.

The General Manager of lnstitute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu disclosed that the increase possibly resulted from the recent enforcement exercise embarked upon by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), in line with its statutory duty of facilitating compliance with the Road Traffic Laws, through periodic checks for valid vehicle documents.

According to her, some of the vehicle documents being checked by VIS include Roadworthiness, Vehicle Licence, Drivers Licence, lnsurance Certificate, Hackney Permit and Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) card – which are meant for all categories of commercial commuter vehicles and professional drivers.

In her words, “The monthly report of the Institute shows a significant increase of more than 50 per cent in the month of February 2020, compared with the total number of drivers that presented themselves for training in January 2020”.

Tiamiyu advised the drivers to visit any of the Agency’s Centres closest to them in order to reduce the congestion at its Ikeja Centre, reiterating that the Institute operates through four other centres spread across the State namely lkorodu Centre, Lagos State Transportation (VIS) Yard, Odogunyan, lkorodu; Badagry Centre, Oko Afo, after Agbara lndustrial Estate, Badagry; Lagos lsland Centre, Oja Oba Market by Adeniji-Adele, Lagos Island and Epe Centre, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation Yard, Epe- Ikorodu Road, Epe.

“Some of the drivers travel from different locations across the State to attend the mandatory training programme at the Drivers’ Institute located at Ikeja when they can easily access a centre closest to their area of residence. All motorists must note that the institute’s facility is replicated across the State with state-of-the-art equipment and seasoned instructors”, she asserted.

The General Manager, therefore, called on all professional drivers, especially commercial vehicle operators to avail themselves of the opportunities provided by the government to ensure sanity and compliance with the Lagos Road Traffic Laws.
