The Lagos State Government has assured that it will continue to improve on the standard of education to make the system a reference point across Nigeria.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, made the assertion at the Public Service Staff Development Centre’s maiden Distinguished Personality Lecture Series, noting that the State has achieved developmental strides in areas of academics and infrastructure.

Speaking as Guest of Honour on the topic: “Leadership and Management of Educational Institutions: Issues, Challenges and Solutions”, Adefisayo emphasised that leadership is about collaboration and team playing, pointing out that everyone aspiring for a position of leadership should have a vision and focus in order to be successful.

In his contribution, the Guest Speaker, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun, while speaking on the same topic, urged all management of educational institutions to take discipline seriously and hold people accountable for their actions.

Prof. Fagbohun advised students to be thoroughly engaged with learning and development, telling them to shun cultism and focus on their primary reason for attending University which is education to obtain academic qualifications.

Fagbohun said stakeholders in the Education Sector must take responsibility for where the system has failed in order to move the sector forward, observing that the frequent attacks by militants on institutions of higher learning is a challenge that can be surmounted through collective efforts of all Nigerians.

In his own submission, the Director-General of PSSDC, Dr. Senukon Olufunmi, stated that the Distinguished Personality Lecture Series was conceptualised by the Centre as a result of its desire to impact the society, hence the choice of focusing on the education sector.

“Knowledge is power. When an individual knows, he will apply that knowledge beneficially”, the Director-General noted.

He said that PSSDC has leveraged on its relationship with LASU over the years, through the immediate past VC whose track records and transformational leadership style became institutionalised in the University during his tenure as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor.
