A 40-year-old businessman, Ayodele Mac Davis has been arrested by the police at the Adeniji Adele Division, Lagos Island and charged before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court accused of conniving with a lady still at large to obtain the sum of N6.9 million from a visa seeker under false pretence.
The police alleged that the defendant connived with one Beatrice Evbuomman, a native of Benin City, Edo State now on the run to collect the sum of N6.9 million from the complainant, Habeeb Isaq with the promise to use the money to procure a Canadian visa for him to travel abroad.
The police said the accused and his accomplice failed to fulfil the promise and instead converted the money to their use and fled.
Police said that following the development, the complainant reported the matter to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Adeniji Adele Division, Lagos Island who gave a marching order to his team to fish out the suspects.
The police team succeeded in arresting Davies at a hideout in Lagos, while his accomplice, Evbuomman managed to escape to Togo, Benin Republic.
After an investigation by Sargent Abraham Friday and his team, Davis from Warri, Delta State and a resident of Agbor Close, Osoloway, Isolo, Lagos was charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island on a four-count bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, aiding and abetting Evbuomman to escape.
Police Counsel, Ben Ekundayo told the Court in the charge marked TA/4/2024 that the defendant committed the offence on 23 March, 2024 at 5, Odunfa Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.
Ekundayo informed the Court that the defendant connived with the fleeing accomplice, Evbuomman who happened to be the mastermind in defrauding the complainant of the N6.9 million with the pretext of procuring a Canada Visa for him knowing fully well that their claims were false.
He said the defendant’s offences were punishable under sections 411,314,287 and 107(1)(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Davies pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate, M.A Owunmi granted him N2m bail with two sureties in like sum.
Owunmi adjourned the case till 27 August, 2024 for the commencement of trial.
