The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, over his recent comments rejecting the court ruling that imposed a life sentence on the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Saturday, November 23, and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the party accused Obi of attempting to politicise a sensitive national security issue and interfering in an ongoing judicial process.

According to the APC, Obi’s intervention amounted to an effort to regain political relevance, alleging that his public criticisms of the Federal Government’s handling of the case were inconsistent with his past responses to security challenges in the South-East.

APC Questions Obi’s Consistency on Security Matters

The statement questioned what it described as “inconsistencies” in Obi’s position on violent separatist activities, claiming that the former Anambra State governor had not previously taken a decisive stand on attacks linked to IPOB in the region.

The party further challenged Obi to clarify why he condemned terrorism in other regions of the country but had, in its view, “avoided clear condemnation” of violent incidents in the South-East.

Judicial Process Must Be Respected — APC

The Lagos APC emphasised that the legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu remain a matter for the courts and should not be influenced by political commentary.

It reiterated that national security concerns, including cases related to treason and terrorism, must be handled within constitutional frameworks and free from what it described as “political pressure.”

Calls for Caution in Public Commentary

The party urged political leaders to avoid statements capable of heightening ethnic or regional tensions, warning against what it termed “free-style politics” that could exploit national challenges for political advantage.

According to the statement, Nigerians should treat Obi’s remarks as “a political reaction” rather than a reflection of the realities of the judicial process.

APC Reaffirms Support for Federal Government

The Lagos APC restated its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government’s approach to national security, urging citizens to allow ongoing legal processes to run their course.
