American YouTube sensation IShowSpeed on Wednesday achieved a major career milestone in Lagos State as he clocked 50 million subscribers on YouTube while celebrating his 21st birthday during a live broadcast.
The popular YouTuber and Twitch streamer, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., is in Nigeria as part of a wide-ranging African tour that began on December 29, spanning about 15 countries across the continent and attracting massive crowds at every stop.
Lagos, Nigeria’s cultural and economic hub, was one of the highlights of the tour.
IShowSpeed kicked off his visit at the bustling Balogun Market on Lagos Island, where he was met by an excited crowd. Surrounded by security personnel, the influencer appeared amused and slightly overwhelmed by the fast-paced exchanges with traders and passersby before leaving the area.
He later visited Freedom Park, a historic site once used as a colonial-era prison, where he sampled Nigerian jollof rice for the first time, reacting playfully to its spicy kick. His tour of the city also included a stop at the famous Nike Art Gallery, a regular destination for international celebrities and dignitaries visiting Lagos.
Speaking at Freedom Park, a Lagos-based YouTuber, Stephen Oluwafisayomi, popularly known as Stevosky, said IShowSpeed’s visit was helping to project African culture to a global audience.
“IShowSpeed is showcasing the culture, relationships, cultural differences and food. He wants Americans to see Africa as a place they can also come to,” he said.
The highlight of the day came around 6:00 pm when IShowSpeed halted his convoy by the roadside to watch his YouTube channel cross the historic 50-million-subscriber mark. In celebration, he marked his birthday by playfully plunging his face into a cake as fans cheered online.
Another fan, Karim Jari, an 18-year-old student at the Nike Art Gallery, noted that while the creator sometimes highlights challenges across countries he visits, the exposure could inspire positive action.
“He may show some negative aspects, but that should motivate people to help, contribute and improve these places through business, fundraising or other means,” he said.
IShowSpeed’s African tour has featured several headline-grabbing moments, including racing a cheetah in South Africa, playing football with 100 children in Angola, visiting Kenya’s Maasai community, and attending the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Morocco. He also celebrated Senegal’s AFCON victory in Dakar a day before arriving in Nigeria.
The Cincinnati-born content creator began building his online following about a decade ago through gaming videos before expanding into lifestyle and travel content. His influence has continued to grow rapidly, earning him recognition as Rolling Stone’s Most Influential Creator of 2025, while Forbes estimates his net worth at about $20 million.
His Lagos appearance further underscored Nigeria’s rising profile as a key destination in global pop culture and digital entertainment.
