The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Friday ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault on the President of the National Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.

This was confirmed in a statement signed by the Force Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, with Egbetokun consequently directing the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to take over the matter.

Adejobi said that IGP Egbetokun issued this directive with the primary objective of ascertaining the true facts surrounding the incident.

According to him, the IGP is eager to address any ambiguities that may exist, as the Police have been inundated with different versions of the incident, making investigations imperative to clear the conflicting accounts.

“The Nigeria Police Force understands the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust,” the Police spokesperson stated.

“The IGP therefore assures the public, most especially the leadership of the organized labour, that a thorough and unbiased inquiry will be conducted to provide clarifications.”

Adejobi said Egbetokun has also urged organized labour and the public to remain calm, as he has personally intervened to address the issues surrounding this incident.

He added that an investigation has commenced, and the Nigerian Police Force guarantees that it will be followed to a conclusive end.

Adejobi further said that appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation into the incident which occurred in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Update on Ikoyi Collapsed Building

Contrary to speculations, no directive has been given for the demolition of the two high-rise buildings standing at the site of the 21-storey collapsed building in Ikoyi, Lagos. The Panel of Inquiry instituted into the collapse of the building has continued to sit and an integrity test on the two buildings is yet to be conducted on the two buildings. It is, therefore, wrong to assert or speculate that the buildings will be demolished.
