Rotary International District 9110 (D9110), Nigeria has continued to make sure the world is a better place for all to leave. The humanitarian service club whose members cut across countries and all states in Nigeria most especially Lagos and Ogun State has organized a seminar targeted at preserving the ecosystem and encouraging greener environment at her district headquarters in Ikeja tagged Save Planet Earth.
The District Governor for Rotary D9110, Dr. Jide Akeredolu has urged Nigerians to plant trees and key into the agenda of the district for the 2019 – 2020 Rotary Year with where Rotary Connects The World.
In less than 90days of the new year which began in July, Rotary Clubs had planted over 1000trees in Lagos and Ogun State to improve the ecosystem and the livelihood of the people.
In his comment, “for few years now, Rotary International has keyed into the global warming and saving the planet earth. Many of us thinks its the problem of the West but its now hitting us in the face, now we talk about global warming, we talk about erosion and others, even in Lagos the rate of flooding is increasing and more is that; the see level is rising and its rising because of global warming”, he said.
He further speaks on desertification and very high in flock of people into Lagos from Chad, Niger Republic and other countries as a result of desertification in their various place of abode. “The trees are no longer there and that is why they are all tilting towards us and until we take this seriously; we are facing a serious ecological problem”.
” Those in the West have a lot of money to prevent this but we do not have and the earlier we start preventive measures. All our gutters are clogged with plastic materials that will not degrade and more are still coming. The earlier we know we have a big problem coming the better for us”, Dr. Akeredolu said.
“Rotary have identified this and this year we are planting trees and we are even going to request the state government to allocate a park for us to design and plant trees to support and complement the effort s of the government”, Dr. Jide concluded.
The event witnessed all major stakeholders in the ecological and cleaner environment sector who further educated guests, Lagos and Ogun state Rotarians from the professional angle and the technical effect of this benefiting strides of Rotary’s service to humanity.
Also present at the seminar are Mr. Adewunmi Adetona, the Assistant Director of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) who elucidated on Cleaner Lagos and the roles of LAWMA in preserving the ecosystem, Mrs. Balikisu Adeniyi Abiola former manager, Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) that speaks extensively on Tree Planting and Ecosystem, and Sanitarian. Taiwo Awonuga, President Lagos State chapter of Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN) ably represented by Sanitarian. Moses Onaolapo and shed more light on How to Preserve the Ecosystem.
The Chairman Ecosystem and Tree Planting Committee for Rotary D9110, Rotarian. Jelili Efedi on behalf of the district appreciated all clubs who had planted over 1000 trees across Lagos and Ogun for saving the planet earth and further called on philanthropist and cooperate organization to join and support rotary to do more.
