A major legislative step towards modernising Nigeria’s agricultural sector has been recorded as a bill sponsored by Rt. Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
The bill seeks to amend the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act to establish an effective regulatory framework for agricultural machinery, equipment and technologies through the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM).
The proposed legislation provides for mandatory testing, certification and registration of agricultural machinery and equipment, alongside enforcement mechanisms and prosecution powers for relevant authorities.
The proposed reforms are intended to address concerns surrounding the quality and safety of agricultural machinery, strengthen institutional oversight and accelerate the adoption of appropriate technologies to improve productivity and efficiency in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
