The political landscape in Enugu State is set for a major realignment as Governor Peter Mbah, alongside members of the State Executive Council, lawmakers, and key political figures, will officially defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The development was confirmed by the Enugu APC Caretaker Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who disclosed the governor’s impending defection while addressing journalists at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Friday, shortly after his swearing-in.
According to Nwoye, Governor Mbah’s move to the ruling party will mark “the end of Enugu’s ten-year spell in opposition politics,” as he will be joined by top political office holders and grassroots leaders from across the state.
“The governor is not coming alone. He will be declaring for the APC with 260 ward councillors, 24 members of the House of Assembly, members of the National Assembly, and the entire State Executive Council,” Nwoye revealed.
The APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and the Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, inaugurated a new seven-member caretaker committee for the Enugu chapter, noting that the move was part of broader efforts to strengthen the APC’s structure and influence in the South-East.
Recall that the APC National Working Committee had earlier dissolved the Enugu State Executive Committee to pave the way for Governor Mbah’s formal entry into the ruling party.
In his remarks, Prof. Yilwatda charged the caretaker committee to prioritize inclusivity and membership growth, while ensuring that existing party members are duly recognized and respected.
“We must maintain our loyal members — those who have laboured and sustained this party through the years. But at the same time, the APC remains a home for all — old and new members alike must enjoy equal rights under our Constitution,” Yilwatda stated.
He also emphasized the need for unity and discipline within the party as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging the new leadership to uphold fairness and due process in party administration.
“You must lead with integrity, without bias or personal interest. The oath you took binds you to serve all members equally — friends and critics alike,” the APC National Chairman cautioned.
The defection of Governor Mbah and his team is expected to significantly alter the political equation in the South-East, positioning the APC for stronger performance in future elections.
