The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed concern over what it described as the steady decline of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party appears to be sliding toward political irrelevance across Nigeria.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, the party said the PDP, once regarded as a dominant national platform, is now grappling with deep internal crises that have eroded its relevance in the country’s political landscape.
According to the Lagos APC, persistent leadership disputes, lack of ideological direction, and recurring internal divisions have weakened what was once described as Africa’s largest political party, reducing it to a shadow of its former self.
The party also reflected on the period when the Peoples Democratic Party governed Nigeria, describing those years as a difficult chapter in the nation’s history marked by widespread mismanagement, institutional decline, and economic distortions whose effects the country is still working to overcome.
Rather than learn from past experiences, the APC said the PDP has continued along a path of internal discord and political opportunism, noting that the crises currently rocking the party are the cumulative result of years of poor leadership culture and disregard for institutional discipline.
The Lagos APC added that the unfolding situation within the party reflects a cycle of self-inflicted challenges that have continued to undermine its ability to function as a credible political platform.
“In Lagos State, the PDP’s presence has steadily diminished as residents continue to place their confidence in the progressive governance and development-driven policies of the APC,” the statement said.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to people-centered governance in Lagos, promising to continue advancing policies aimed at economic growth, infrastructure development, and expanded opportunities for residents.
While acknowledging that democracy thrives with a vibrant and responsible opposition, the Lagos APC said it is unfortunate that the Peoples Democratic Party has repeatedly failed to effectively play that role.
It urged the party to reflect on its internal challenges and reposition itself, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy deserves a more organized and constructive opposition.
The statement was signed by Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo on March 13, 2026.
