The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District I, Agege, Mrs. Margaret Titilayo Solarin, has stressed the need for school administrators to imbibe relevant skills that will make learning more interesting and engaging, thereby enhancing students’ performance.
Speaking at a retreat organised for Principals in the District, on Saturday, at the Government Senior College, Agege, Mrs. Solarin, said the training was necessary to chart a new path in making learning and teaching more interesting.
She said, “We believe this retreat is needed to enable us review all that we have done in the past, particularly at the beginning of the session. Most importantly, while the WASSCE for this year has been shifted forward to August, we believe we should review all that we have done and look forward to what we can still do”.
“We have brought in seasoned retired principals and we know that with this training, we will yield better results, better performance in teaching and better students’ performance, particularly in this year’s WASSCE”.
The Tutor-General assured the students in public schools that the next session will usher in more interesting learning, envisaging that students’ performances will be greatly improved with better results.
While urging the school administrators in the District to remain pacesetters and standard-bearers in academics, co-curricular activities, inventions and impeccable behaviour among other achievements, she anticipated continued development with materials available online and offline for better performance by all and sundry.
Her words: “The State relies so much on school administrators to help interprete and implement all government policies on education. This is to ensure the enviable outcomes expected from students in the various schools and institutions, as well as the positive impact to be felt by the society at large, through adequate and objective learning”.
The Permanent Secretary also urged the Principals to put all they have learnt to practice, adding that they should be proactive in getting the best for their schools, saying “Learn from others and always provide a helping hand for contemporaries to grow”.
Mrs. Solarin reminded participants of the giant strides of the present administration in recent times, including the building of new schools, massive renovation of existing structures, State teachers merit award, upgrade of libraries and laboratories, supply of ICT equipment, supply of furniture and massive recruitment of teachers and training among others.
Also speaking, the Chairman, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Agege Zone, Mr. Kolawole Sofolahan, said the training would ensure that the school administrators remain on top of their jobs and also outline requirements for the development of the students.
He urged participants to remain passionate about the development of students both in their academics and in all other areas, noting that with the training, school administrators are up to the task and would improve on their performance towards achieving the required excellence.
Sofolahan, who is also the Director/Principal, Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, commended the State government for its commitment to the development of the educational system.
One of the facilitators, a Retired Principal from Education District 1, Agege, Mrs. Folashade Alabi, said the retreat was necessary to enable teachers get it right and also how to bring up the students in the right way so that they can contribute meaningfully to society when they grow up.
“Training like this will not only prevent teachers from making mistakes in the upbringing of the students but, also help the students know the right things to do and be what they should be in the society”, she said.
