Manchester City marked Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th match in management with a commanding 3–0 victory over Liverpool, closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to just four points.
Erling Haaland put aside an early missed penalty to open the scoring with a looping header — his 99th Premier League goal — before Nico González’s deflected strike and a stunning solo effort from Jeremy Doku sealed a statement win at the Etihad.
The result reaffirms City’s status as Arsenal’s closest challengers and deepens Liverpool’s crisis, with the defending champions now losing four of their last five league matches to drop to eighth, eight points off the summit.
Guardiola’s Milestone, Haaland’s Redemption
City dominated from start to finish, with Doku’s dazzling footwork proving too much for Liverpool’s backline. The Belgian winger won an early penalty after being clipped by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, only for Haaland’s spot-kick to be saved.
Undeterred, the Norwegian — who has now scored in 16 of his 18 appearances this season — made amends by rising highest to meet Matheus Nunes’ wicked cross in the 29th minute.
Liverpool briefly thought they were level when Virgil van Dijk’s header found the net, but the goal was ruled out after Andy Robertson was judged to have obstructed Donnarumma from an offside position.
City punished the visitors moments later as González’s strike took a cruel deflection off Van Dijk to double the lead.
Doku Dazzles as Liverpool Falter Again
Cody Gakpo spurned Liverpool’s best chance of the night, blazing over from close range after fine work from Mohamed Salah and Conor Bradley.
Then came Doku’s crowning moment — a sensational curling strike from the edge of the box that left Konate rooted and Mamardashvili stranded, sealing an emphatic victory.
Salah’s late miss summed up Liverpool’s evening and season so far, while coach Arne Slot’s decision to leave £125 million striker Alexander Isak on the bench highlighted growing tactical questions.
For City, it was another display of composure and depth — 11 wins in their last 14 games across all competitions — and a fitting way for Guardiola to mark a landmark night.
