Today, October 23, 2025, marks the 109th posthumous birthday of Alhaja (Dr.) Abibatu Mogaji (MFR) — the legendary Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, celebrated for her unmatched contributions to commerce, women empowerment, and national development.
From her humble beginnings as a young trader in Isale Eko to becoming the President-General of the Association of Market Women and Men of Nigeria, Mama Mogaji’s life was defined by courage, vision, and compassion. She transformed Lagos’ market economy, empowered women across generations, and played an active role in Nigeria’s political evolution.
Born on October 23, 1916, into a devout Muslim family in Ita Agarawu, Lagos Island, Alhaja Mogaji’s early exposure to trading and activism under the mentorship of Madam Alimotu Pelewura shaped her into one of Nigeria’s most formidable grassroots leaders. Her activism began in the 1930s as a young voice in the Nigerian Youth Movement, and later as a founding member of Egbe Omo Oduduwa and the Action Group led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
By 1956, she had become a respected community leader, among the few women who welcomed Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Nigeria. In the years that followed, she became a major force in the campaign for the creation of Lagos State and was recognized by the state’s first military governor, Brig.-Gen. Mobolaji Johnson, for her contributions.
During the Second Republic, Alhaja Mogaji was a strong pillar of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and mobilized women in Lagos for Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s victory in 1979. Her leadership and influence later earned her the official title of Iyaloja-General of Nigeria under General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration.
Her remarkable leadership extended beyond markets — she was a philanthropist, a symbol of women’s empowerment, and a champion of social justice. She received over 70 national and community awards, including the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) honour.
Despite personal losses — including the death of 10 of her 11 children — Alhaja Mogaji remained steadfast in faith. Her only surviving son, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, rose to become the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Her grandson, Hon. (Prince) Adedamola Richard Kasunmu (ARK), currently serves as Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Before her passing on June 15, 2013, Mama Mogaji blessed her family and forgave all who had offended her — a testament to her magnanimity and godliness.
As Nigeria remembers her at 109, her legacy continues to shine through her descendants and the thousands of women whose lives she transformed.
May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her eternal rest in Aljanna Firdaus.
Happy 109th Posthumous Birthday to the Matriarch of Lagos Markets — a Mother of Courage, Commerce, and Compassion.
