The Flying Eagles of Nigeria secured their first win at the ongoing 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup with a pulsating 3-2 triumph over Saudi Arabia on Thursday night, in a contest that kept fans on edge until the final whistle.
The Nigerians started brightly, and in the 11th minute, forward Nasiru Salihu rose highest to meet a fine cross from Sani Suleiman, heading past the Saudi goalkeeper to hand Nigeria an early advantage.
But the lead lasted just 10 minutes. Saudi Arabia’s Amar Al Yuhaybi capitalized on a loose ball, firing home to restore parity in the 21st minute. The equalizer temporarily shifted momentum to the Middle Eastern side, who grew more confident in possession.
Nigeria, however, regained their rhythm before the break. A cleverly executed set-piece routine in the 38th minute saw Amos Ochoche finish clinically, restoring the Flying Eagles’ lead at 2-1 going into halftime.
The second half was just as tense. In the 50th minute, Talal Haji punished a defensive lapse to level once more for Saudi Arabia at 2-2, setting up a nerve-wracking finale. Both teams pressed for a winner, with chances at both ends, but wayward finishing and the woodwork kept the game delicately balanced.
The defining moment came deep into stoppage time. In the 94th minute, Nigeria were awarded a penalty after a Saudi defender was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. Captain Daniel Bameyi held his nerve, dispatching the spot-kick with authority to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
The result not only secured Nigeria’s first three points of the tournament but also breathed fresh hope into their World Cup campaign.
With renewed momentum, the Flying Eagles now turn their focus to their next group fixture, as they continue their push for glory on the world stage.
