The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the adoption of direct primaries as the preferred method for selecting its candidates in the forthcoming elections, while reaffirming its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and internal democracy.
In a statement issued after the successful conclusion of the party’s National Convention, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Lagos State Chapter, commended party leaders and members for their support, resilience, and sacrifices in achieving the milestone.
The party stated that the next phase will focus on electing candidates who will represent the APC at the polls, in strict compliance with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the 2026 Electoral Act (as amended), and other relevant laws.
While direct primaries will serve as the primary option, the party noted that consensus arrangements may also be adopted where such agreements are freely reached and widely accepted by all stakeholders.
The APC leadership emphasized that all elective positions are open for contest, stressing that there is no anointed candidate for any office. Aspirants were encouraged to participate in the process in line with established guidelines, with a clear notice that nomination and administrative fees will not be refunded.
Reaffirming its progressive stance, the party pledged to provide a level playing field for all contestants, ensuring a free, fair, and transparent process that reflects the true will of party members. It also highlighted its commitment to gender inclusivity by offering special consideration to credible and influential female aspirants across constituencies.
Members were urged to abide by the rules, maintain decorum, and uphold discipline throughout the process, as the party ruled out any form of imposition or undue influence in determining the outcome of the primaries.
The statement concluded with a call for unity, dignity, and mutual respect among members as the party awaits official primary guidelines from its national leadership.
Long live APC, Long live Nigeria.
