The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government Council, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, has joined a select group of emerging African leaders at the Summit of Young Local Elected Officials in Africa, held in Dakhla, Morocco, in a move that underscores his commitment to progressive governance and international collaboration.

The summit, convened by United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, brought together young public office holders from across the continent to exchange ideas, strengthen governance frameworks, and explore innovative solutions to Africa’s evolving socio-economic challenges.

Participants from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Morocco, and Chad engaged in discussions focused on key issues such as rapid urbanisation, youth unemployment, and environmental sustainability, while emphasising the need for inclusive and forward-thinking leadership at the grassroots level.

Speaking at the forum, Obasa stressed the critical role of young leaders in shaping Africa’s future, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved when youths are actively involved in governance, not just as future leaders but as present-day contributors.

He called for a shift from rigid bureaucratic systems to more agile, innovation-driven local administrations capable of delivering measurable impact. According to him, transparency, institutional strength, and the strategic use of technology are essential to improving service delivery and accountability.

The Agege chairman also highlighted the importance of collaboration among African nations, stating that cross-border partnerships are vital for knowledge sharing, institutional growth, and unlocking economic opportunities.

On youth development, Obasa advocated for deliberate policies that create structured opportunities for young people to participate in governance. He emphasised the need to equip youths with relevant skills, integrate their ideas into policymaking, and foster an environment that encourages innovation.
He further pointed to digital transformation and modern urban planning as key drivers of efficient governance, urging local governments to adopt smart technologies such as digital identity systems and improved revenue management tools.

The summit featured sessions on leadership development, policy innovation, and strategic collaboration, aimed at equipping participants with the skills required to navigate modern governance challenges.
In a show of unity, Obasa also met with El Khattat Yanja, Mayor of Dakhla and President of Young Local Elected Officials in Africa, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation among African leaders.

Obasa’s participation highlights the growing influence of Nigerian local government leaders on the continental stage and signals opportunities for stronger international partnerships and the adoption of global best practices to drive grassroots development.
