President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic 2–1 victory over Japan in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent.

The President, in a congratulatory message shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday night, praised the young Nigerian footballers for making history by becoming the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Tinubu disclosed that he watched the final moments of the tournament after returning home from official engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, where he met First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu watching the decisive encounter against Japan.

He described the victory as a remarkable achievement, noting that the Flamingos had fulfilled their promise to bring the trophy home following their semi-final triumph.

“I followed your remarkable journey throughout the tournament in Morocco, and I remember your promise after the semi-final victory to bring the trophy home. Today, you have kept that promise with courage, discipline and unwavering belief in yourselves,” the President stated.

Tinubu further observed that the triumph transcended football, saying it would inspire millions of young Nigerian girls to dream big, compete internationally and aspire to excel in their chosen fields.

He congratulated every member of the victorious squad, the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission and all those who contributed to the team’s historic achievement.

On behalf of the Federal Government and the Nigerian people, the President saluted the Flamingos for bringing immense honour to the country and opening a glorious new chapter in Nigeria’s sporting history.

“Your triumph goes far beyond football. Millions of young Nigerian girls will look at what you have achieved and know that they, too, can dream big, compete with the best and reach the pinnacle of their chosen fields,” he added.

The President concluded by celebrating the team’s outstanding accomplishment, declaring: “Nigeria celebrates you. I celebrate you.”

The Flamingos’ historic victory marks a significant milestone in African women’s football and further underscores Nigeria’s growing legacy in youth football development.
