Fayose, Obasanjo Clash Publicly Over Comments Made at Birthday Event

A fresh round of political confrontation emerged on Monday as former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, sharply criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo over remarks made during Fayose’s recent birthday celebration.

A fresh round of political confrontation emerged on Monday as former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, sharply criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo over remarks made during Fayose’s recent birthday celebration.

In a strongly worded message addressed to the former President, Fayose described Obasanjo’s comments at the event as “irresponsible,” adding that he deliberately refrained from responding during the ceremony to avoid an open confrontation.

Fayose accused Obasanjo of making remarks unbecoming of his status as an elder statesman, alleging that the former President had displayed signs of diminishing restraint. He also requested that Obasanjo return the money he presented at the event, referring to Obasanjo’s public acknowledgement that he had received it.

Part of Fayose’s message read:

“Dear Baba Obasanjo, your attendance at my birthday, I appreciate. But your comments were very irresponsible at your age. I kept quiet at the function so the world would see the difference between a sane man and a mad man.

I shall set the records straight in due course. Lastly, I would appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received it.”

Responding swiftly, former President Obasanjo dismissed Fayose’s remarks, saying the message only confirmed Fayose’s character. He added that the money Fayose referred to had already been returned to him through the same channel by which it was delivered.

Obasanjo stated:

“Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message, which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable. Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo, who brought it, and in the same bag, unopened by me.”

The exchange has sparked widespread reactions across political circles and social media, marking yet another chapter in the long-running history of tense relations between both men.
