There is renewed optimism in Nigeria’s World Cup campaign as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the FIFA Rankings released at the end of October will be used to determine the seeding of four teams for the continental playoff in Morocco — a decision that could favour the Super Eagles.
The Confederation of African Football has officially informed all Member Associations of the details regarding the upcoming continental play-off to determine Africa’s representative for the FIFA Intercontinental Play-Off.
The circular, signed by CAF Director of Competitions and Events, Samson Adamu from Nigeria, confirms that the play-off (Africa’s potential 10th spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup) will take place in Morocco, with seeding based on the October FIFA Rankings.
This clarification comes ahead of Matchday 10, the final round of the African qualifiers.
As of September 2025, Nigeria was ranked 6th in Africa, while most of the continent’s top-ranked sides — including Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria — have already secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This development means that the Super Eagles still stand a strong chance of reaching the playoffs, provided they finish at least second in Group C, regardless of their total points.
CAF Seeding Format:
1️⃣ Highest-ranked nation
2️⃣ Second highest-ranked nation
3️⃣ Third highest-ranked nation
4️⃣ Fourth highest-ranked nation
Proposed Schedule:
⚽ Semifinals: November 13
Final: November 16
With the new criteria in place, Nigeria’s path to the World Cup remains open — a lifeline that will depend heavily on both performance and global ranking.
