The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has issued a clarification regarding a recent incident being circulated on social media, which alleged that gunmen shot and killed a civilian, identified as Rilwan Adekunle, inside a market within the Ojo Military Cantonment, Lagos.

In a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, the Division described the viral report as misleading, stressing that the incident did not occur within the Ojo Military Cantonment.

According to the statement, the Army received a distress call on October 18, 2025, concerning a shooting incident near the Mammy Market abattoir gate. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident was cult-related, and unfortunately resulted in the loss of one life.

The statement further explained that an Army standby team immediately responded and evacuated the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, being the nearest medical facility. However, the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical personnel.

While expressing condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, the 81 Division reaffirmed its commitment to supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and order within its area of responsibility.

The Army also urged members of the public and the media to verify information from relevant authorities before sharing, to prevent the spread of misinformation and panic.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased,” the statement concluded.
