Over 200 irate youths on Wednesday attempted to lynch two policemen in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos, but the police have to shoot one of them to save their lives.

It was gathered that a team of policemen had effected arrest in Ibeju Lekki and on getting wind of the arrest, irate youths in the area moblised to rescue the arrested suspect.

On getting to the scene, the police were said to have taken the suspect away and on returning back the youths were said to have sighted two policemen guarding a company and immediately descended on them.

They would have lynched them if one of them had not opened fire on one of the attackers as the others fled’

Spokesman, Lagos Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement explained that  policemen effected arrest somewhere in Ibeju Lekki on Wednesday.

“Youths in the area got wind of this and mobilized to rescue the suspect. They arrived late and missed the policemen.

“On their way back, they sighted two armed policemen guarding a company. The irate youths, numbering over two hundred then decided to descend on the policemen, pelting them with stones and destroyed a Lexus SUV within.

“When it became apparent that the mob was hell-bent on lynching the policemen, the policemen justifiably used their firearm. One of the attackers was hit; and is currently responding to treatment in hospital.

“The policemen were able to protect themselves and prevent further wanton destruction. Normalcy has returned to the area. Investigation has commenced to arrest other fleeing attackers, after which they will be prosecuted,” he stated.
