Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board Chairman, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King has said the State government’s investment in schools’ infrastructure will only yield the expected result provided there is a deliberate attempt to enhance the capacity of human resources through continuous training of teachers.
Alawiye-King made this submission recently at a five-day capacity building workshop for Early Child Care Development Education in Lagos with the theme: “Effective Management of the Classroom”.
He said, “We can have the best of infrastructure, if we don’t have the right sets of teachers, I don’t think the learning outcome we are going to get is going to be very encouraging”.
The Board Chairman noted that government requires teachers that are academically and professionally qualified and will, therefore, continuously train its workforce to be at par with their contemporaries globally.
“The world is changing, evolving on a daily basis and in order for us to survive in a competitive world, we need extra-ordinary skills, we need additional skills and that is why it is necessary for us to provide these skills for you”, the Chairman restated.
The training, according to him, was part of the policy direction of the Board to empower teachers, by preparing them for a higher calling, through the acquisition of necessary skills required of them to be competitive anywhere in the world.
He urged the participants to take advantage of the training, which is being held in three different centres across the State – namely Kosofe, Oshodi and Lagos Island – to improve themselves as well as ensure that it reflects on the performance of the pupils of Lagos public primary schools positively.
The Chairman averred that the Board members of LASUBEB remain committed to their promise of bequeathing better educational standards to the people of the State, especially through its mantra of ‘Leave No Child Behind’.
The Director of Schools’ Support Department, LASUBEB, Mr. Ade Abatan enjoined participants to extend the knowledge gained at the training programme to the school pupils and other teachers.
In his words, “We do expect that the lessons learnt at this programme should not end with you. When you get back to your school, we want to see changes in the school children as well as your colleagues. You should cascade the knowledge you are going to gain from the training to them”.
The representative of the Universal Basic Education Commission (Abuja) Achu Anne, appreciated the Executive Chairman of the Board for the opportunity given to the teachers through the training programme.
Other Board Members of LASUBEB present at the event include Ms. Sherifat Adedoyin-Sanusi, Mr. Dayo Isreal and Mr. Bayo Adefuye.
