The launch of the YOUTHCRED for Entrepreneurs Initiative by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been described as a bold intervention aimed at transforming Nigeria’s youth from job seekers into job creators by providing easier access to affordable business financing.

For years, one of the biggest challenges confronting young entrepreneurs has been the inability to secure loans due to stringent collateral requirements, guarantors, and high lending costs imposed by conventional financial institutions. As a result, thousands of promising business ideas have remained unrealised despite the determination and creativity of Nigerian youths.

The YOUTHCRED initiative seeks to remove these barriers by offering loans ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦2 million without the need for collateral or guarantors. Instead, applicants will be assessed based on business cash flow, repayment capacity and responsible credit history, reflecting global best practices in enterprise financing.

The programme targets a broad spectrum of young entrepreneurs, including caterers, fashion designers, mechanics, artisans, ride-hailing drivers, makeup artists, content creators, farmers, NYSC members and other operators within Nigeria’s informal economy. These businesses form the backbone of the country’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and are widely recognised as key drivers of employment and economic growth.

Unlike previous empowerment initiatives that focused largely on grants, YOUTHCRED promotes a culture of responsible borrowing and financial discipline. Beneficiaries who meet repayment obligations will qualify for larger credit facilities, creating a sustainable financing cycle that encourages business expansion and accountability.

The initiative also incorporates financial literacy training, ensuring that participants acquire essential knowledge in financial management, business planning and responsible borrowing before accessing higher loan limits.

Analysts believe the programme could have far-reaching economic benefits by enabling young entrepreneurs to expand operations, purchase equipment, create new jobs and stimulate local economies. Increased business activities are also expected to boost household incomes, strengthen value chains and contribute to poverty reduction.

Beyond its economic impact, the initiative is expected to promote social stability by creating legitimate income opportunities for young people, thereby reducing vulnerability to crime, cyber fraud, drug abuse and other social vices.

The programme’s fully digital application and verification process is designed to enhance transparency, reduce bureaucracy and improve access through partnerships with regulated financial institutions.

With an initial target of 500,000 beneficiaries and plans to expand to one million young entrepreneurs, YOUTHCRED has the potential to become one of Nigeria’s most significant youth empowerment programmes if effectively implemented.

However, stakeholders have stressed that the success of the initiative will depend on strict adherence to repayment obligations, efficient loan processing by participating financial institutions and transparent programme management.

According to Oladejo, President Tinubu’s vision reflects his belief that Nigeria’s greatest asset is its people. He noted that the initiative demonstrates confidence in the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerian youths by providing them with the financial tools needed to succeed.

He described YOUTHCRED as more than a loan scheme, saying it represents a strategic investment in entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, job creation, economic diversification, poverty reduction and national development.

Oladejo urged young Nigerians to take advantage of the initiative responsibly, describing it as a timely intervention capable of unlocking the nation’s vast entrepreneurial potential while accelerating inclusive economic growth.

CBA Foundation calls out in-laws over Dehumanisation of widows

After Mrs kumbaya (name changed to protect her identity) lost her husband at work in 2005, she was accused of killing him. The accusation did not come from her husband’s brothers but his sister, who had earlier lost her own husband. It took the combined hard work of the brothers to get their sister off the back of her fellow widow. They told their sister pointedly that she too could face the same accusation she was levelling against their sister-in-law, since her husband was deceased too.
